Recommendations overview
Recommendations combines your product catalog and customer behavior into ranked feeds you can show in email, the visual editor, and push notifications.
Covered in the Academy. Lesson 6.3 of Intempt Academy covers recommendations step by step.
Overview
Recommendations is the part of Intempt that turns your product data into personalized product suggestions. It's built from two connected pieces, both reachable from Catalog in the left navigation: your product data (Catalog) and the recommendation logic built on top of it (Feeds). Once you have a feed, you can pull it into emails, visual editor experiences, and push notifications.

How it works
Catalog has two tabs:
-
Products. A searchable table of every product synced into Intempt, with columns for image, title, price, status (Active or Draft), and when it was last updated. See Catalog for the full walkthrough, including the product detail page.
-
Sources. The connections that keep your product data in sync: a Shopify integration, or a custom catalog source for any other platform, connected via a JSON or XML feed URL.
Feeds, opened from the secondary navigation under Catalog, lists two feed types:
-
Merchandising feed. Ranks products using one of Intempt's built-in algorithms (Best Sellers, Recently Viewed, People Also Viewed, and others), with optional filters to include, exclude, or pin specific products. This is what powers on-site and in-message recommendations. See Setting up product recommendations to create one, and How to use product feeds and recommendations for the full algorithm reference.
-
Ad feed. Renders per-SKU creative and publishes it as a CSV that your ad networks pull on a schedule. This is a separate workflow from merchandising feeds.

Once a merchandising feed exists, you can pull it into:
-
Emails, with a Product block that renders the feed's ranked list.
-
Visual editor experiences, with a Grid block or Carousel block that renders the feed's ranked list.
-
Push notifications, where a feed can supply the dynamic product image.
Use cases
-
Homepage best sellers. A Merchandising feed using the Best Sellers algorithm, shown in a Product Grid block on your homepage.
-
Product page cross-sell. A "People Also Viewed" or "Similar to This Item" feed shown below the main product on a product detail page.
-
Cart abandonment email. A "Recently Added to Cart" feed dropped into an email's Product block, showing the exact items a customer left behind.
-
Personalized push notification. A feed supplying the dynamic product image in a push message, so each recipient sees a different product.
-
Retargeting ads. An Ad feed publishing a CSV of per-SKU creative for your ad network to pull on schedule.
-
Non-Shopify catalog sync. A custom catalog source connecting a JSON or XML product feed for a store that isn't on one of Intempt's built-in integrations.
-
Curated recommendations. A Merchandising feed with a Pin filter, so a specific product always appears first regardless of what the algorithm would otherwise rank.
Where to go next
-
Setting up product recommendations: create your first merchandising feed.
-
Catalog: view and manage the product data feeds draw from.
-
Creating a custom catalog source: connect a catalog if you don't use Shopify.
-
Creating a product feed: configure a feed's algorithm and filters in depth.
-
How to use product feeds and recommendations: the full algorithm and filter reference.
-
Recommendations Feed API: pull a feed's ranked product list by API.
How to use product feeds and recommendations
Product feeds rank and recommend products using one of Intempt's built-in algorithms, plus optional filters, then serve that ranked list to your site, emails, and push notifications.
Setting up product recommendations
Create a recommendation feed from your product catalog, choose an algorithm, and use it in your campaigns.
