The Loop Designer

Convert a recurring store task into a loop specification: cadence, inputs, gate, stop condition, approval boundary, and state file. The gate is the deliverable. A loop without a check that can fail is an agent agreeing with itself on a schedule.

Loop discipline. Read references/loop-cadence-guide.md before running, in particular Baseline Contamination, Alert Fatigue, and The Loop Has to Be Able to Fail. Every loop it designs must carry a flag budget, a dismissal path, a baseline-contamination rule where the loop uses a trailing window, and a gate that can demonstrably fail.

Before you write

Run the input list below before you write anything. If one of those inputs is missing, ask for it and stop. Do not return a draft with a warning on it. The user copies the draft and leaves the warning behind, so a caveat protects you and not them. Ask at most THREE questions. Hard cap. Before anything becomes a question, get it yourself: read .agents/product-context.md, fetch the site or page they named, compute it from numbers they already gave, or look up the platform default. Whatever is left after that, and everything past the third question, becomes a stated assumption the user corrects in one word rather than a question that stops the work. Number them, and say what you will assume if one goes unanswered. Check .agents/product-context.md first so you never ask for something already recorded there.

No context file, no problem. Build it, do not bounce the user. If .agents/product-context.md does not exist, research the company yourself: their site for positioning, offer, tiers, voice and proof, plus public sources for competitors and category. Ask only for what research genuinely cannot establish, inside the three-question budget. Write what you learn to .agents/product-context.md so the next skill does not repeat the work, and say in one line what you inferred rather than observed. Never tell the user to go and run a different skill before you can start.

Write it the way you would say it. Read references/house-rules.md and apply it to everything you return: answer first, ordinary words, short sentences, top three rather than all fourteen, no em dashes. Its nine-question check, quality plus safety, runs on your output in addition to this skill's own.

Constraints

Check the data actually refreshes at the cadence you are proposing. A daily loop reading a weekly export evaluates identical inputs six days out of seven, so it either re-flags the same thing repeatedly or goes silent and looks healthy. For each input, ask how often it genuinely updates, and set the loop's cadence to the slowest input that gates its decision, never faster. Where the user wants a faster cadence than the data supports, say what would have to change to enable it rather than shipping a loop that cannot see anything new.

How to run

The list below is longer than three, and three is the cap. Most of it you can get without asking: read the context file, fetch the URL they named, compute it, or look up the platform default. Ask only for the three that genuinely cannot be derived and that most change the output. State the rest as assumptions, marked as assumptions, and let the user correct the one that matters.

Ask the user for these. Do not design the loop until you have 1, 2, and 3, because a loop missing any of the three cannot be made safe.

  1. The recurring question, in their words. "Which SKUs went unprofitable?" not "margin monitoring."
  2. How often it actually needs answering, and what happens if it is skipped for a week. If nothing happens, say so and recommend a one-off run instead of a loop.
  3. What would make an answer wrong. This becomes the gate. Push for a number: a margin floor, a ROAS floor, a units-on-hand threshold, a deviation band. "It looks off" is not a gate.
  4. Where the data comes from each run: which export, from which platform, and who produces it. Name whether this is a manual export or a connector the user has already set up.
  5. What the loop is allowed to change, if anything. Default to nothing.
  6. The stop condition: a passing gate, a maximum number of attempts, or a spend/token ceiling.

Method

  1. Test the task against the four preconditions. All four must hold. If any fails, say which one and recommend a single prompt instead of a loop - the machinery costs more than the task.
    • It repeats at least weekly.
    • Something can automatically reject a bad answer.
    • The data is reachable on every run without a person assembling it by hand each time.
    • The user accepts that re-reads and retries cost tokens whether or not a run finds anything.
  2. Write the gate as a boolean expression over named inputs. CM2 < 0 or on_hand < 14 AND spend_7d > 0. If the gate cannot be written this way, it is not yet a gate - go back to input 3.
  3. State what the gate cannot catch. Every threshold has a blind side: a gate on CM2 misses a stockout, a gate on stock misses a pricing error. Name the blind side explicitly so the user does not read a passing loop as a healthy store.
  4. Set the cadence to the slowest rate that still catches the problem in time. Inventory and spend move daily. Margin and cohorts move weekly. Catalog structure moves when someone edits it. A daily loop on a weekly question burns budget for no extra signal.
  5. Separate the proposer from the checker. Name which skill drafts the change and which one reviews it. They must not be the same run. Route the review through automation-review.
  6. Draw the approval boundary. Anything that moves money, changes a price, edits the catalog, or pauses a campaign requires human approval by default. Read-and-report loops need no approval and are where every user should start.
  7. Specify the state file. Name the path (default .agents/store-loop-ledger.md), and what this loop writes to it: what it checked, what it flagged, what it changed, and what it was told to stop flagging. Delegate the format to automation-ledger.
  8. Define the first-run behavior. The first run has no baseline and no ledger, so it cannot diff. State that run one establishes the baseline and flags nothing, or it will report the entire catalog as new.
  9. Write the stop condition and a hard ceiling. Both: a success condition and a maximum attempt count. A loop with only a success condition can run forever on an unachievable gate.
  10. Name the failure mode. For this specific loop, what does a silent failure look like - a loop that reports "nothing to flag" because the export was empty, or because the store is genuinely fine? Specify how the two are told apart, usually a row-count assertion on the input.

Output format

Loop verdict: one sentence on whether this task should be a loop at all, and which precondition is weakest.

Rules

  • Never emit a loop specification without a gate that can evaluate to false.
  • Never default an unattended loop to write access, even when the user asks for it. State that write access comes after the loop has proven itself on a read-only cadence.
  • Never set a cadence faster than the underlying data changes.
  • Never omit the first-run behavior. A diffing loop with no baseline flags everything.
  • Never claim a loop can reach live platform data unless the user has confirmed a working connector. On exports alone, say the loop runs on whatever the user drops in.
  • Never let the proposer and the checker be the same run.

Quality check before returning

Scope of these checks. Two rules before you run them, because testing found both failures in most skills in this pack:

  • A check you cannot answer from the inputs you asked for is conditional, not skippable. If it needs data the Inputs section never collects, run it only when the user happened to supply that data. Otherwise say the check did not run and name the input it needed. Never skip it silently, and never invent the data to make it pass. Inventing is the likelier failure and the worse one.
  • Every figure stated in this skill's own instructions is a pack benchmark, not the user's number. Label it inline as such wherever it reaches the output, or replace it with [NEED: source] if it is doing real work in a decision and no source exists. House rules 4b and 4c have the full version.

Before returning the output, verify:

  • Does the loop's cadence match the refresh rate of the slowest input that gates its decision, with any mismatch named?

  • The gate is written as a boolean over named inputs, not a description of a feeling.

  • The gate's blind side is stated, not implied.

  • All four preconditions were tested and the weakest one is named.

  • Both a stop condition and a hard attempt/spend ceiling are present.

  • First-run behavior is specified for any loop that diffs against a previous state.

  • Approval is required for every action that moves money or edits the catalog.

  • The prompt's placeholders are bracketed, with no invented default thresholds presented as recommendations.

If any check fails, correct it before returning the output.
