Remote workstation
Tips for making your workspace healthy and safe.
Remote work has many benefits, but it also comes with risks. Poor ergonomics can compromise your health. Blurred boundaries can wreck your work-life balance. A little setup goes a long way. For equipment support, see the Home Office page. For tips on managing energy and focus, read Stress & Mental Health.
Workplace organization
Think about your desk, computer, surroundings, lighting, temperature, and noise. Small improvements compound over time.
- Position your monitor at eye level -- looking down strains your neck
- If using a laptop, get a separate keyboard and a stand or riser
- Noise-canceling headphones help if your environment is loud
- Good lighting reduces eye strain -- natural light is best
- Keep your desk clean and organized
Intempt provides $500 support over 3 years for workstation equipment. Use it. Details on the Home Office page.
Working routine
Have a clear daily routine. Structure is your friend when working from home.
- Don't work from bed -- your brain needs to separate sleep from work
- Remember to stretch and blink -- set a reminder if you have to
- Set clear boundaries for when work starts and ends
- Make a task list each day so you know what done looks like
- Don't eat near your computer -- take a real break
- Scrolling social media is not rest -- it's still screen time
- Unplug from work when you're done -- close the laptop, leave the desk
